Stalking the light…

I was traveling west along I-80 to Cedar Rapids, chasing the sun through the clouds. Crossing over the Mississippi River the sun broke from the clouds and made the most spectacular light. I took the Wells Ferry road exit and started making frames of golden red corn fields. Wonderful!

Around the State Line

I spent an afternoon just south of the Indiana state line in this heavy industrial area close to Lake Michigan. The BP Refinery, Marktown and State Line power are all part of this industrial section south of Chicago, Ill.

Haiti & Paul Hansen

Last year while covering the Haitian earthquake aftermath, myself and several other photographers were in the downtown area of Port au Prince following local police as they attempted to maintain control over looting crowds. During the chaos Fabienne Cherisma, 15, was shot in the head by police and died instantly. During the next few minutes one of the images I made shows the scene and the many photographers capturing images of her lifeless body.

As it turns out one of those photographers, Paul Hansen, a staff photographer with the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, has won newspaper photographer of the year in the 67th annual Picture of the Year International competition at the Missouri School of Journalism.

I feel it is important to share with viewers a glimpse of the situation that surrounded Fabienne’s tragic misfortune.

Chicago’s Cabrini-Green

Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood was officially closed and the last remaining family moved to another CHA housing project in Dec. 2010. I began this documentary back in August 2010 spending time with current and former residents capturing the essence of this historic neighborhood. I used medium format and digital mediums to record day to day life in an attempt to preserve the last remaining days of this community.

Chicago Blizzard

The Blizzard that rocked the mid-west and produced more than 20 inches of snow for the Chicago area caused major problems for including the closure of Lake Shore Drive. Nearly 1300 vehicles were caught in the storm and were eventually abandoned effectively closing the outer drive from 67th Street on the south to Hollywood Ave in the north. The strong gusting winds made for white-out conditions, created three to four foot snow drifts and made almost all streets in the metro area impassible. The storm is blamed for a least 11 deaths and closed Chicago’s public schools for the first time in over 12 years.

The Newberg family walks on Green Lake in Elkhorne, WI., where the ice is 10 inches thick and local residents have established ice fishing spots across the frozen waters.

Rahm Emanuel, a candidate for the Chicago mayoral election introduces himself to volunteers at the Hyde Park campaign office before rallying supporters on a "All City Canvass" with a goal to reach 22,000 Chicagoans in all 50 wards of the city.

Mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel announced his aggressive anti-crime agenda to ensure the safety of every neighborhood in Chicago.

Lake Michigan waves have added an estimated 300 feet of new frozen shore line to the Montrose Beach.

Chicago Housing Authority’s Cabrini Homes are in the fianl stages of demolition. With only a few months remaing I have been spending much more time walking around and getting to know the people of this neighborhood.
